Common: Be (2005)

“I wanna be free as the spirits of those who left…”

This is one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time. There was a mini golden age of hip hop in the mid 2000’s when Kanye was breaking out, and his fingerprints are all over this LP.

In 2005, “Be (intro)” was my ringtone, and “Go” was the alarm on my phone. This album and Late Registration were in heavy rotation in my blue Honda Civic, eventually along with Stadium Arcadium by RHCP.

Listening to this album today, I’m instantly transported to Taylor Avenue in Poughkeepsie, NY. In my mind, I’m getting ready to go out to one of the local spots while these tunes bump in the background.  That’s one of the beautiful things about music — its ability to take you back to a particular time and place like it was yesterday.

Suitable for: An evening full of possibilities

Appropriate Playback Device: An early model iPod connected to your car via the aux input
